Heart & Blood Vessels

The cardiovascular system is the body's transport network — delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell and removing waste. Understanding it gives you a clear map for protecting one of the most modifiable determinants of how long and how well you live.

Chapters — 7

01

The circulation system

How blood flows through two loops — pulmonary and systemic — and why the vascular network is the foundation of everything else.

02

Heart anatomy & function

Four chambers, four valves, one pacemaker — how the heart is built and how exercise changes it.

03

Blood pressure

What the numbers mean, why hypertension is called the silent killer, and how to keep pressure in a healthy range.

04

Cholesterol & atherosclerosis

How plaques form in arterial walls, what LDL and HDL actually do, and why inflammation is the mechanism that matters.

05

Exercise & heart fitness

Zone 2 training, VO2 max, and why physical fitness is one of the strongest predictors of cardiovascular longevity.

06

Risk factors & prevention

Modifiable vs. non-modifiable risk, the key screenings to get, and what questions to ask your doctor.

07

Warning signs & check-ups

Emergency symptoms that require immediate action, symptoms to discuss with a doctor, and a simple screening schedule.

Why it matters

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide, yet most major risk factors — sedentary lifestyle, poor diet, smoking, unmanaged hypertension — are modifiable.

Warning signs

Seek emergency care immediately (call 999/911): chest pain, tightness, pressure, or heaviness — especially if it radiates to the jaw, neck, arm, or back; sudden shortness of breath at rest; palpitations with dizziness or fainting; sudden severe headache, facial drooping, or arm weakness (possible stroke — act immediately). See your doctor within days: new or worsening exertional shortness of breath, persistent unexplained fatigue, ankle or leg swelling, new irregular heartbeat felt at rest.

Educational only. For urgent symptoms, call emergency services or speak to a doctor.
